Palo Alto High School graduate and current University of California at Los Angeles senior Paula Wu won Miss Taiwan World 2010 in Los Angeles on August 14, according to a press release from the Miss Taiwan Foundation.
Wu beat more than 100 other competitors from all over the world, including participants from North America, Taiwan, Japan and Brazil. The competition, organized by theMiss Taiwan Foundation, promotes “Taiwanese culture to young Taiwanese Americans and to the people around the world," according to the organization’s website.
Born in Palo Alto, Calif., Wu graduated from Paly in 2007 and went on to attend UCLA. While at Paly, she wrote for Verde, the school's news magazine, and debated for three years on the varsity speech and debate team.
Wu is not just a beauty queen. According to the Miss Taiwan Foundation, the trilingual senior, fluent in Mandarin, English and Spanish, is also the editor-in-chief of the UCLA Undergraduate Science Journal and a Howard Hughes Undegraduate Research Fellow. Additionally, she is completing her second summer working for the National Institutes of Health as a research assistant.
The Miss Taiwan Foundation’s press release also noted that, on top of her new duties as the new Miss Taiwan World, which include representing the organization as an ambassador by forwarding Taiwanese values, Wu plans on pursuing a dual-M.D./Ph.D. degree with the intention of becoming a physician-scientist.
More information to come.
Editor's Note: Wu is currently planning to pursue a dual-M.D./Ph.D. degree, but is not yet enrolled in such a program. The current version of this story reflects this change.
